Max Rippon Mini Interview Thursday, 20 December 2012 /// Written by Trippe
As we approach the Holidays (are we there now?), we thought we'd check in with some of the artists currently showing in our Winter Group Show at FFDG on display through Jan 12th.
We've been posting up Barcelona based Max Rippon's (RIPO) work for years now (since 2009?). He does a lot of it outdoors and some of it indoors like he did with his recent show at White Walls (pics).
For some press release terminology:
Heavily influenced by sign painting, Ripo creates text-based work with an urban aesthetic, exploring single words and short turns of phrase with a tongue-in-cheek sensibility. Elaborately-drawn fonts, formed with watercolor, ink, graphite, sign painters enamel and oil pastels on delicate handcut paper, allow us to appreciate the aesthetics of the words regardless of their associations.... Here is a short interview with the prolific fella covering all the bases.
Location? Age? Education? Website?
Barcelona, Spain. Coming around the bend of thirty years.
Educated. www.ripovisuals.com
"Untitled" currently showing @ FFDG
How would you describe your work to someone?
Alphabetic. Calligraphic. Sarcastic. Serious. Destructive. Constructive.
Influences?
My friends, my brother, the Internet, and letters, signs, and sights I come
across in the streets. Coming across unintentionally hysterical signage is the
best.
Favorite place traveled?
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Working routine? Music? Time of day?
It can range from midday to midnight. An "average" day (I actually don't have
these too often) I wake up mid-morning and do a bit of work in the studio or on
the computer before running errands. If I get out of the house too late I won't
be able to do anything since most places close in Spain during lunchtime.
It's one of the most inconvenient things about living here. Then later in the
afternoon I'll get down to business in the studio until someone distracts me
and drags me out at night.

ROA Update Tuesday, 18 December 2012 /// Written by Trippe
Our buddy in Copenhagen Henrik Haven emailed over a massive update from Belgium street artist ROA. All kinds of goodies from around the world.
South Africa- Jobannesburg - Thanks to I ART JHB, Ricky, Monica and the team!
Sleeping Fox - Painted in July in rainy Bristol.
Driving from the east to the west of America (thanks Marcy and Alex) to stop at Tucson. By invitation of Eric Firestone of the Boneyard Project I got to paint this
US Navy discarded plane that been used during the Korean war. Painting such a 'loaded' surface, gives some 'weight' during painting it.

Apex @941 Geary Friday, 30 November 2012 /// Written by Rachel Ralph
Work by Apex Reflected, an exhibtion of street artist APEX's newest work opened at 941 Geary last Friday. The space was packed with people looking at several large works on canvas, a wall mural, and framed sketches, most of which had sold by the end of the night. The work shows APEX's interest in the dualistic characteristics of nature and unfolds symmetrically across his black canvases. The matte and shiny black stripes that extend across the gallery floor and walls contrast perfectly to his curling and undulating forms. The space and the work support one another, and this is one show you should check out for both aspects before it closes on January 5th.

Sten Lex in Paris Friday, 26 October 2012 /// Written by Trippe
Considered as pioneers in their use of the stencil in Italy, STEN LEX, age 30, started their career in their hometown of Rome in 2001, and rapidly acquired an international reputation. Their work consists of portraits of anonymous characters that they photograph as well as portraits from album covers from the '60s.
We're fans of their work and have been following it for a few years now. Highly enjoy their massive outdoor works.

Fame Festival - Grottaglie, Italy (Part 2) Wednesday, 17 October 2012 /// Written by Henrik Haven
What a journey this has been! Me and my girlfriend had such a good time in Grottaglie, Italy at this years Fame Festival. Tasty food, good coffee, great people, lots of sunshine and last but not least, we saw a bunch of excellent public art pieces in the streets of the town. We spent many days walking around the whole town to find most of the pieces, just like a treasure hunt.
Anyway, here's a photo documentation of some of the new murals in this neck of the woods which are all from 2012 (I think?). The excellent lineup included artists like Erica Il Cane, Vhils, Interesni Kazki, Conor Harrington, Cyop & Kaf, Momo, Lucy McLauchlan, Bastardilla, Moneyless, Boris Hoppek and the local artist Giorgio Di Palma, who creates beautiful handmade ceramic objects like the telephone/phonebooth in this album.

Special Delivery by Endless Canvas Friday, 14 September 2012 /// Written by Michael Kershnar
Special Delivery presented by Endless Canvas went off last Saturday night in Berkeley. Over 3000 people rolled out to peep the four story abandoned ink factory filled with 100 new murals from some of the Bay's Finest Graffiti Writers and Street Artists. Non-stop live hip-hop on the first story was cracking along with fresh pieces from BVRS and Jaut, while the second story featured death defying work from Swampy and Chert, an Oakland African Village installation by Dead Eyes, a Coyote Cartoon Graffiti church and some clean SF Funk from Sway, S8n, Jeans, and The Fresh Prince.
The third floor was an insane DJ Dance party from Miggy Stardust in front of a classic Pemex burner. Ras Terms, Safety First, Oddfelllow, Edith, and Gats also came correct as always. If one were strong and brave enough to climb to the roof, you would know it was cracking up there as well. Big ups to Endless Canvas for putting it all together. It was amazing to see so many generations, and people of such diverse backgrounds all celebrating the art together with a positive vibe and getting their groove on. It was definitely a night that will live on in Bay Area Art History. -Michael Kershnar

More From Copenhagen Monday, 10 September 2012 /// Written by Trippe
Looks like we're featuring Copenhagen today on Fecal Face as Simon Hjermind Jensen emailed over photos from his massive mural project he and Theis Wendt, Anders Schmidt and Silas Inoue worked on there in Copenhagen. He writes:
The mural resembles a giant tanker, grounded on the streets of Copenhagen. The tanker is influenced by the form of the wall that together with the existing chimney already looks like a ship. The cracks in the tanker resonate with the decay from the already existing graffiti, which has been preserved and thus incorporated into the motif. The ship is empty, there are no logos on the containers, and there is no motif's that gives a certain explanation on how the ship has ended where it is and why it's abandoned. In this way the ship invites to a mental exploration, open for whatever value or narrative the viewer wants to create. http://www.shjworks.dk/

Special Delivery, Sat in Berkeley Wednesday, 05 September 2012 /// Written by Trippe
Special DeliverySat Sept 8th Berkeley, California details
A large warehouse in Berkeley, which has been vacant for over a decade, has played a role in the local graffiti scene here in the Bay Area. It was recently purchased by a Bay Area based firm with plans to refurbish the building into a permanent office facility. The owner of the company happens to be on the board for the Oakland Museum of California. As an inspired art enthusiast, he noticed some of the graffiti in the building was done by the very same artists whom are currently exhibiting at the OMCA. Saddened by the destruction of this museum worthy artwork and the cultural history behind it, he asked Endless Canvas to invite the artists back to restore the graffiti in the warehouse.
For the last few months Bay Area street artists have been painting the three story warehouse for a show to open to the public this Saturday evening, Sept 8th. The location of the show will be announced on Friday here.
Anyone going to check this out and wanna cover it for Fecal Face? Let us know. contact(at)fecalface.com
SPECIAL DELIVERY is a large scale mural exhibition featuring a number of prolific street artists from the Oakland / San Francisco Bay Area.
What has resulted is a three part project. Part one: a professional photographer has documented all of the graffiti pieces in the building. Part two: we will be hosting the SPECIAL DELIVERY Art Show. For this we have invited over 80 of the Bay Area's most prolific street artists to paint the interior space of the building, to be exhibited for public view in September. The new pieces will be documented thoroughly then later removed for necessary renovation of the warehouse. It will take about a year to refurbish the building. Once this process is complete, a selection of artists will be invited back to install permanent murals on the interior walls of the building. All three stages will be documented and followed by a published book sharing the project as a whole.
All of the participating artists have spent a significant amount of time creating works of public art in the Bay Area. Some have been featured in museums and documentaries and others are home town heroes in the underground art scene.

Gone Fishin'
Tuesday, 13 October 2015 11:39
I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...
I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.
It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.
Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34
When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.
Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37
NYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?
The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.
Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF
Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto
Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art
The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding
